A lot of people think freelance translation is simple: translate the text, send it back, send invoice – project done.

In reality, especially in tourism, marketing and localisation work across Germany, the UK and further afield, it often looks more like juggling systems than just language. CAT tools, platforms, booking engines, client portals for files, feedback and approvals – and sometimes a portal that exists only to redirect you to another portal…

On top of that, there’s the constant coordination layer: tracking terminology sources, brand guidelines, updated glossaries, and figuring out where anything actually lives this week.

The real value isn’t just linguistic skill. It’s being able to move across multiple tools, workflows and processes without breaking consistency or slowing delivery. For freelancers working in this space, “being good with tech” is no longer a nice extra. It’s part of the job description, even if it doesn’t always show up on the invoice – and a big part of what makes the work brilliant.

This is what keeps projects running smoothly in the background. And when it works well, clients don’t see any of it – just seamless delivery, exactly as it should be.
