I gave both Claude and ChatGPT the same challenge this week (with an identical, simple prompt): rebuild the spreadsheet I’ve been using regularly for the past five years.

The result?
ChatGPT created a spreadsheet that looked even sadder than my original one. Which, quite frankly, is quite an achievement.

Claude, however, produced a fully formula-driven multi-sheet tracker with auto-calculations, dropdown menus, cross-referencing, monthly summaries, and a layout that actually made me want to open Excel voluntarily. A rare event indeed!

I was genuinely impressed by how capable AI tools have become for practical business workflows – building systems that save real time. For freelancers and sole traders juggling ten roles before lunch, that’s a pretty big shift.

Having said that, the free usage limits give you a taste of what AI can really do, before hitting you with a paywall of disappointment.

Still, it’s fascinating seeing these tools move from “interesting experiment” territory into genuinely useful business support.

Ironically, the image in the visual was created with Copilot. Maybe I should put this to the test as well!

Which AI tool has surprised you recently – for better or worse?
