Sometimes you don’t need to travel far: At the weekend, I decided to play tourist in my own city and joined the tower tour at the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral.

After climbing well over 300 steps, I was rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the city and the surrounding countryside. On a sunny day, you really appreciate just how much history, landscape and character is spread out beneath you.

Tours and admission tickets can be booked online, making it even easier to secure a place in advance.

It was a great reminder that some of the best travel experiences can be found right on your doorstep. Sometimes all it takes is climbing a few hundred stairs and looking at a familiar place from a completely different perspective…
