Space travel history isn’t just about astronauts and rockets. It started with an idea.

I recently visited the Museum & Archiv für Raumfahrtgeschichte in Feucht, Germany, and found myself completely absorbed by this small museum with a surprisingly big story to tell.

The collection is compact, but the subject is fascinating – and our private guide was incredibly knowledgeable, bringing the exhibits and their stories to life.

The museum explores how the idea of travelling into space developed from mythology and science fiction into serious scientific and technical research.

Until the 19th century, space journeys were largely the stuff of myths and imagination. Then scientists and engineers began asking a very different question: could space travel actually become possible?

Four men played a particularly important role in this development: Konstantin Ziolkowski, Robert Esnault-Pelterie, Robert Goddard and Hermann Oberth, now regarded as some of the fathers of modern rocketry.

Oberth is particularly significant here because of his connection with Feucht, making this little museum an especially interesting place to discover the story.

And that’s what I loved about the visit: it reminded me that great tourism experiences don’t always come in a big package. Sometimes a small specialist museum, a passionate guide and a story you knew little about can make a surprisingly memorable experience.

It’s also a great reminder for tourism marketing: the story behind a place can be just as important as the attraction itself.

For international visitors, simply listing what an attraction offers isn’t always enough. Thoughtful translation and transcreation can bring the story to life in a way that connects with the target audience.

Have you ever visited a small, specialist museum that completely surprised you?
